Review: When the Sparrow Falls by Neil Sharpson

June 15, 2021 by Dan Smith Leave a Comment

When the Sparrow falls is a literary scifi spy thriller in the vein of Altered Carbon meets the Iron Curtain – set in a future where people can have their consciousness digitized. The Triumvirate are, George, Athena and Confucius, three Super AI who rule the world apart from Caspian, a state that rejects all the Machine would offer and places strict law and harsh judgement on anyone using said tech from within their territory; it’s a place which finds comfort in state executions, and the only real escape is a bullet through the head or a needle in the back of the neck … if you can find Yoshik.

Review: Anna by Sammy H.K. Smith

May 12, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Anna is an upcoming release by veteran author Sammy H.K. Smith, and, wow, honestly it left me speechless. Which is a really interesting thing to say about a book that could really encourage a lot of dialogue. Anna’s story was a brutal read at times and joyful at others, but it was always enthralling.

Review: The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

March 22, 2021 by David W Leave a Comment

The Last House on Needless Street is as good, if not better, than advertised. Believe all of the hype surrounding this novel from names like Stephen King, Joe Hill, Paul Tremblay, Alex North, Sarah Pinborough and a litany of others. It is an absolutely mesmerizing novel; a bone-chilling masterwork of dark fiction that is as disquieting as it is heart-wrenching. A true standout in the genre.

I’d say this book is a cross between Dexter and Riverdale… if you’re looking for a fast, funny B-movie of a book, then be sure to pick this up!

Review: Skyward Inn by Aliya Whiteley

February 23, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Skyward Inn by Aliya Whiteley is a really trippy science fiction novel about the aftermath of a war on another planet, called Qita. The Inn serves as a gathering place for residents: a place where they can imbibe and connect with others; that is, until a new face disturbs the peace.
