For me, Of Blood & Fire feels like a love letter to classic, traditional fantasy. Ryan Cahill is passionate about the fantasy genre. I thoroughly enjoyed Of Blood & Fire and I look forward to getting to the chonky sequel!

The Exile is a companion story to Ryan Cahill’s The Bound and the Broken, and the second novella to come out of the series. The narrative is broken into 4 parts and tells the background story of Dayne, who appears in book 2 of the series and becomes an important figure and fan favorite.

There was also a solid twenty minutes or so towards the end where each panelist offers up amazing writing advice for the aspiring and working authors out there. Side note: this panel was beautiful chaos, featuring many mic drops, dick jokes (just the words, not actual jokes), crotch biting references and more.
It has become a bit of a tradition for me to post a list of five of the books I am looking forward to in the coming year (though, in this case, as I am a little late getting it written – it is actually books for this year). For me personally Of Darkness and Light could have been 900 pages longer and it wouldn’t have mattered. It’s that epically good.

Arrows whoosh. Fire burns. Hearts beat. Blood pumps, spills; the start of Darkness and Light is visceral like the Fall, but this situation seems entirely worse. What starts in fire and loss end in complete darkness with a singular ray of light that is the exciting, jaw-dropping cliff-hanger that rounds off such an expansive novel. It lifts the lid on the story that started with Of Blood and Fire. The Dragonguard and the imperial army descend upon one boy and his adolescent dragon. The night holds its breath as we wait for the fires to come …
