Review: Iron Truth (Primaterre #1) by S.A. Tholin

Iron Truth is in the finals of the first ever SPSFC. I read it as part of the judging process.

Wow, just… wow. I knew Iron Truth was a chonker going in but I didn’t expect to get such an incredible, epic story. Where Iron Truth starts and where it ends are two very different places plot-wise. This isn’t a slow paced book, instead you get through into a story of epic hollywood cinema proportions that will hurtle you along. Not only that but the story itself is addictive and unputdownable so you won’t mind in the slightest.

Review: The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

The Kaiju Preservation Society is the latest release from famed SFF author John Scalzi. It is a story about a group of people tasked with preserving kaiju, which are interdimensional, giant flying creatures (I picture a cross between a dragon and a dinosaur). I got Avatar-meets-Jurassic Park vibes from this book. It was an enjoyable read.

Review: The Blood Trials (The Blood Gift Duology #1) by N. E. Davenport

I loved N. E. Davenport’s The Blood Trials. I went into this book without any expectations and turned the final page both surprised and satisfied. It offers up a complex world, rife with geopolitical conflicts, futuristic technologies and awesome fight scenes. But it also introduces a dark, supernatural magic system that plays into the racial and social dynamics of its corrupt society. All of this combines for a solid debut and a wondrous world that I can’t wait to read more of.
