If you follow me on Twitter or we talk in any capacity you’ll know that I’ve become somewhat of a broken record recently. Truthfully, I’ve been kicking myself for the past few weeks over having waited this long to start this series! As Dan says above, We are the Dead and The Last War trilogy as a whole is an absolute must read. Mike Shackle has to be one of the most criminally underrated authors currently writing.

Review: A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows
The juxtaposition of a culture of repression to one of acceptance set up the foundation for a plot rich in mystery and political intrigue. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoyed “Winter’s Orbit” by Everina Maxwell, also published by Tor in 2021. Tor is understanding what readers want. Written in an elegant prose, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance features a world rich in depth and filled with lush descriptions that readers will melt over.

Review: Eversion by Alastair Reynolds
Alastair Reynolds is a sci-fi author who is typically at the top of the genre lists when looking at the best of modern sci-fi. I read his first book in the Revelation Space universe and found it enjoyable but was not particularly compelled to keep reading. I’ve been wanting to give his work another shot (that was his first published novel after all) and when I saw Eversion was a shorter standalone novel, I had the perfect opportunity.
Book Tour Review: Whispers of Stone (The Last Gift #2) by Allegra Pescatore
Whispers of Stone fulfilled every requirement for a sequel. The world was widened, the stakes were dramatically raised, and the character development kept advancing.
Review: Dusk (The Navigator #2) by Matthew Samuels
When author Matthew Samuels asked me if I wanted to read and review Dusk, I jumped at the opportunity. I had read and reviewed Parasites – the first book in The Navigators series – a couple of years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I thought the story was light and fun with interesting characters and settings. And, mostly, I liked Dusk for the exact same reasons.
