Review: Three Eight One by Aliya Whiteley

January 12, 2024 by Paige Leave a Comment

Three Eight One by Aliya Whiteley

Skyward Inn by Aliya Whiteley was my first big introduction to spec-fic and I’m so excited every time she releases a new book. Three Eight One is a fascinating mix of far-future and past (or maybe present, or recent past??). The bulk of the story is a coming-of-age heroes quest style tale following a girl named Fairly, and there’s also interwoven in, by the way of footnotes and a prologue, a far-future narrative where it seems that people’s consciousness’ are interwoven and you can choose to be ‘born’ into an organic body.

Review: Under Fortunate Stars by Ren Hutchings

It’s a sit down and savor sci-fi that reads like one of the Star Trek episodes where they get stuck in some temporal anomaly and spend the entire time doing sciencey stuffs until they get free at the last minute.

Five Reads for 2022

January 14, 2022 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

It has become a bit of a tradition for me to post a list of five of the books I am looking forward to in the coming year (though, in this case, as I am a little late getting it written – it is actually books for this year). The list of phenomenal books being released in 2022 is endless, so choosing five is so hard. But, here it goes: Five Reads for 2022 (BE WARE: some synopsis may contain spoilers for previous books).

Traveling Cloak’s Top 10 Reads of 2021

January 7, 2022 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) 1 Comment

Hi, book friends! Welcome to my 2021 Top 10 List. This is always a difficult post for me to write, because I feel like I read so many great books, and I do not want to leave any out. But, life is about choices, so I have done my best.

According to Goodreads, I clocked 24 five-star reads in 2021, so I had to make some tough decisions. I decided to keep it to 10 so the post is not too long. Some of those books, though, are from the same series, so I have give those one line instead of having them take up 2 or 3 spots. Also, these are books I read in 2021, regardless of release date. Now, let’s get to the fun stuff: here are my Top 10 books I read in 2021!

The way The Fates were incorporated into the ending had goosebumps rising on my skin. That ending is definitely one of the most memorable ones I’ve read all year!

Review: The Black Coast (The God-King Chronicles #1) by Mike Brooks

November 2, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

The Black Coast is the first book in Mike Brooks’ epic fantasy series The God-King Chronicles. It is a great start in what appears to be a promising story.

Review: Shackled Fates (The Hanged God #2) by Thilde Kold Holdt

October 23, 2021 by Dan Smith Leave a Comment

Shackled Fates is the second volume in the Hanged God trilogy, the story that carries right on from the first. Right back into the action, right back into the tale; the bard strums his guitar and continues the fireside tale of Vikings, their gods, and the impending final battle. Holdt effortlessly writes with a voice that’s whispered from ear to ear, passed down through the histories and into the story we have in front of us; with face-paced action, large-scale battles, and whispers in the wind, we’re transported through the Nine Worlds again on a story that promises to change the fate of them all.
