Review: The Splinter King (The God-King Chronicles #2) by Mike Brooks

November 5, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) 1 Comment

The Splinter King is the second book in Mike Brooks’ God-King Chronicles series, and the author really goes to great lengths to expand the world and the characters. While I did not think it quite lived up to the expectations set by the first book, I did still enjoy it.

Review: The Liar of Red Valley by Walter Goodwater

September 26, 2021 by Dan Smith Leave a Comment

(The Liar of Red Valley) is a fantastic book full of magic creatures, cool magic and fast-paced plot. While I didn’t get behind some of the side characters, that in itself can play into a massive plot twist that I’m sure no one will see coming. However, it is a shorter book than I’d have liked so saves on going too in-depth. I believe it’s a stylistic choice that all of the magic creatures aren’t described because the human eye can’t behold, the human mind can’t decipher, what they are but it sometimes left a blank space in my imagination with it. However, it was a cool way to deal with beings we simply wouldn’t know how to describe and leaves an original twist on what their appearances might be in that everyone reading will see something different.

Review: The Liar of Red Valley by Walter Goodwater

September 24, 2021 by Ashley Brennan Leave a Comment

The Liar of Red Valley by Walter Goodwater is Rebellion Publishing’s leading title for September, marking it the perfect addition to your fall lineup. Goodwater delivers on all ends by blending together American Gothic, horror, and fantasy genres. Red Valley is brimming with supernatural creatures and closely guarded secrets that are best left untold.

The Liar of Red Valley is listed as an “occult fiction” book and “magical realism”. I guess that makes sense, because it probably falls short of horror, even though there is a lot of creepiness. I really enjoyed it, and I have no problem saying it is an early entry into spooky season.

Review: Campaigns & Companions: The Complete Role-Playing Guide for Pets by Rhianna Pratchett and Andi Ewington

July 26, 2021 by Manny Henri Leave a Comment

There was once a secret meeting in the village where all warriors, sorcerers and clerics gathered to be introduced to an ancient manuscript from a wizard. The wizard stood behind the table and slowly dropped a small book on the table in front of him. “This, my lads, is a book containing… humour! Humour about our companions, our domestic friends with four paws and snouts!!” Everyone’s jaw fell in excitement and curiosity, yet they all were eager to look at what it contained…

Review: When the Sparrow Falls by Neil Sharpson

June 15, 2021 by Dan Smith Leave a Comment

When the Sparrow falls is a literary scifi spy thriller in the vein of Altered Carbon meets the Iron Curtain – set in a future where people can have their consciousness digitized. The Triumvirate are, George, Athena and Confucius, three Super AI who rule the world apart from Caspian, a state that rejects all the Machine would offer and places strict law and harsh judgement on anyone using said tech from within their territory; it’s a place which finds comfort in state executions, and the only real escape is a bullet through the head or a needle in the back of the neck … if you can find Yoshik.

Review: Seven Deaths of an Empire by G.R. Matthews

June 1, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Seven Deaths of an Empire is a new standalone fantasy novel from author G.R. Matthews. It is being billed as grimdark and comparable to George R.R. Martin; however, I would not make those comparisons, myself – at least not to Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. To me, this would closer to old-fashioned, classic fantasy.
