August 9, 2024 by Tom Bookbeard Leave a Comment

A freshly born Mage. A displaced King. What does the land of the fey have in store for them? Roll deception!

Astrid Knight’s delightfully queer D&D portal fantasy, Perception Check has been out for a little while. It received a lot of love from myself and my FFA colleague Sean:

So, now here we are. Two years later. And I just rolled a natural 20 to hit this cover reveal for you. Here’s the eagerly-anticipated cover to Rules As Written!

I cannot wait to put this on my shelf next to Perception Check. Since you’re here, scroll a bit more about the book and your pre-order link! Thanks Astrid!

Blurb

It’s been four months since the Old Gods’ Temple burned to the ground, since the Infernal Mage vanished into thin air. On Earth and on Fractum, a group of outsiders and their crew reel from the consequences of their choices those many months ago.

Violet Spence navigates her former life on Earth–as well as a newly-forged demigod can. Despite searching for a way back to the land of Velmyra, everyone in her life has seemingly given up hope. When the opportunity to return finds herin an unexpected way, however, the game of keeping her new found powers a secret and balancing her deteriorating friendships grows more complicated with each passing minute.

Meanwhile, stranded in Velmyra, Jackson King is running fromdestiny. While attempting to reunite with his friends, a mysterious figure from the land of the fey finds him, advising him that he is the key to her throne. With no other avenues to pursue, Jackson is swept away to the neighboring kingdom of Hevara, where he encounters new allies, new enemies, and the winding politics of Hevara’s rule-bound royalty. But the question of where he fits into the complicated puzzle is the one he is truly afraid to answer.

Rules As Written is the invigorating second installment of the Mages of Velmyra Saga, perfect for fans of Critical Role, Dimension 20, and The Witcher. With lovable characters, explorations of queer identity, political intrigue, and explosive battles, the plot only thickens and will leave you wanting the next book in your hands!

NOTE: Rules As Written deals with the topics of mental health (specifically anxiety and depression), as well as transphobia, gender dysphoria, religious trauma, animal violence, and mentions of genocide and childhood sexual assault.
