Similarly to my Zombie Movies & Shows posts (and Shark Week), I wanted to accumulate a list of slashers that I could come back to and update semi-exhaustively. With the likes of Shaun of the Dead, zombies were something accessible for me that was not necessarily scary back when I wasn’t really into horror. But when I did begin exploring the genre more, Slashers were (and still are) my favorite films in all of horror.
Slashers mix a slew of tropes, mixing and matching them as they please. They can be scary, campy, gory, hilarious, ridiculous, even. The best part for me, though, is how they are often funny, regardless of whether they are actually trying to be. So to me they remain in this in-between of horror and humor, the more insane the better.
Similarly, as with my other lists, this will feature films I have already watched. Compiling and recommending watches for you all at once. I welcome slashers of all shapes and sizes, all seasons (though the summer slasher will always be my fave), holiday-based or not, the silly and serious. The good and bad. Regardless of how you feel about the genre, there’s a reason why all of the horror icons are slashers…

*An OG and argued to be one of the first true slashers. The shower scene? Iconic

*I got to see this classic for the first time in theaters for one of its anniversaries; it was epic. I’m surprised I haven’t gotten to the others yet…

Halloween (1978)
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, to kill again.
*A King of kings in my opinion. Great movie, great icon, great scream Queen.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Five friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.
*Believe it or not, I only watched this like a week ago … and as I avoided horror for years, only catching things randomly, I unfortunately saw more than one remake before this.

Friday the 13th (1980)
A group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer.
*The dawn of another icon. Can’t wait for Pamela in Crystal Lake, and Jason makes for some of the craziest and funniest kills in the game (in sequels).

Sleepaway Camp
Bunks and showers are a mad stabber’s beat at a summer camp strictly for teens.
*Another recent watch that I was pleasantly surprised by. Takes plenty from others while still doing its own thing. The twist at the end and the face will haunt me forever.

The Burning
Abusive former summer camp caretaker Cropsy, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong five years earlier, lurks around upstate NY summer Camp Stonewater with garden shears and bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.
*A surprisingly enjoyable slasher for how flimsy the reason for wanting revenge is IMO, not that slashers are known as reasonable …

A dying serial killer transfers his consciousness into a popular kids doll using voodoo. A struggling single mother gifts her six-year-old son the much sought-after doll for his birthday, and the doll slowly begins to show its true colors.
*While I like the lore and firmly hate scary dolls moving, there’s something about this doll and voiceover that is endlessly funny to me.

*Finally, a Kevin Williamson direct, but sadly it’s ruined because it’s hard to be stoked for the first gay director in the franchise when they clearly aren’t for free speech. Also think they disrespected Matthew Lillard with the worst reveal in franchise history.

Influencers looking to breathe new life into a Texas ghost town encounter Leatherface, an infamous killer who wears a mask of human skin.
*The latest reimaging and the worst. By far. At least for the ones I have seen.

After seeing his parents killed by someone dressed as Santa, a grown man later wears a Santa suit himself and seeks violent revenge.
*A reimagining that meshes the original with something more akin to Dexter. I liked it. NAUGHTY
Clown in a Cornfield
A fading midwestern town in which Frendo the clown, a symbol of bygone success, reemerges as a terrifying scourge.
*Another based on a book. Kind of a group slasher? I liked it for what it was.

When the “it” girls competing for prom queen at Shadyside High start to disappear, a gutsy outsider discovers she’s in for one hell of a prom night.
*People seemed to dislike this one, but I thought it nailed its slasher vibes. Love Stine. I hope they make more.
Time Cut
High school student accidentally travels back to 2003 and decides to stop the serial killer who murdered her sister.
*Shockingly similar to Totally Killer … not as good either.

*After the disaster that was the latest franchise film, we take a brief break for a Rob Zombie reboot. I liked it, but it was very Michael-focused.

*A Polish slasher comedy. Can’t say I remember much, honestly. Didn’t rate it particularly highly.

It’s Christmas Eve and Tori just wants to get drunk and party, but when a robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and begins a rampant killing spree through her small town, she’s forced into a battle for survival.
*Christmas, Terminator, and classic slasher tropes had a baby. It’s not the worst thing ever, either.

Jason Voorhees is cryogenically frozen at the beginning of the 21st century, and is discovered in the 25th century and taken to space. He gets thawed, and begins stalking and killing the crew of the spaceship that’s transporting him.
*Kind of like if Ripley from Alien woke up and became a T-1000. If your horror franchise, or any truly, is not based in space but has the chance to go to space, chances are you shouldn’t.

Her Private Hell
A hypnotic, unhinged thriller with an original story promising plenty of glamour, sex, and violence.
*I feel like this will divide people. It’s a thriller with a slasher smushed into it, and the slasher design is not good. It’s Giallo-inspired, but I really didn’t like it. Love Sophie Thatcher and Havana Rose Liu, but not enough to save it. HPH was my personal hell.

*This appears on a lot of underrated lists, but I think it’s pretty well rated right where it is. Slow to pick up, but pretty early with it’s ’76 release. It’s getting a remake right now too, I think.

*Personally, I liked this one as a close to Laurie Strode, but I do know people who despise it. It gave us Rohan Campbell, who went on to star in the reboot of Silent Night, Deadly Night.
