This was my first time reading David A. Trotter, and I came away thoroughly impressed.
Tales of Ethrea collects three short stories set in the world of Ethrea, and each one serves as both a standalone experience and a window into a larger, richly imagined world. These are stories that live off the beaten path, filled with prophecies, gods, forbidden places, and the kind of deep lore that signals an author who has spent serious time building something expansive. The initial flood of worldbuilding can feel dense, but once you settle into each story, what emerges is a very strong emotional core, and what surprised me most is how different that core is from one tale to the next.
Some of these stories feel like open beginnings, others like dreadful midpoints, and the final one turns deeply personal, dealing with relationships, family, and choices that ripple far beyond a single life. That last story in particular hits with a quiet intensity. These are the kinds of situations you can see, feel, hurt through, and experience alongside the characters. Each tale feels like a turning point in its world, a hinge moment where everything shifts, and Trotter captures that weight with real skill.
The writing is strong throughout. The figures are well-drawn, the plots are compelling, and the tactile descriptions bring scenes to life in ways that stick with you. There’s a romantic quality to the prose that leans a little heavy at times, but it fits the tone of stories that are ultimately about passion, duty, and consequence.
Tales of Ethrea works beautifully as a primer. It’s a quick read that introduces you to Trotter’s voice, his world, and his range as a storyteller, and it does all three convincingly. If you’re looking for a way into this author’s work, this is the perfect place to start. I’ll certainly be reading more.
