Synopsis
This is no revenge story. I ain’t got time for that. I’ve got errands to run and things to do and barely enough time to make it home before sundown. I don’t care why folks are going around stealing ink. I don’t care why the monks are acting kinda strange. I don’t care that everybody is expecting me to save them. I might be a Sistah Samurai but those days playing hero were back when my knees didn’t ache, and I wasn’t the only one left. So leave me alone.
All I want to do is get home, drink some green tea lemonade, and enjoy my peace. I’m not asking for much, so why are all these demons daring to get in my way?
I am not the one. Not today.
Review
From the very first chapter, Sistah Samurai tells you exactly what it is. It’s sassy. It’s a little crass. It’s poetic in the way its protagonist views the world. And it is dripping with badassery.
But beneath all that swagger is a surprisingly emotional journey. This is a story about survivor’s guilt, depression, the weight of womanhood and sisterhood, and the many pressures it takes to not just be a woman but to be a human being. It’s my favorite blend of real-world problems wrapped in a fantastical setting, the kind of story where the magic and the action give you permission to enjoy yourself while the emotional core quietly wrecks you.
The worldbuilding and magic are 100% vibes, ruled entirely by the rule of cool. This is not a system meant to be dissected or stress-tested. It’s meant to be watched and enjoyed, and on those terms it absolutely delivers. Obey knows what makes a moment land, and she leans into it with confidence.
At its heart, though, this is a story about forgiveness. Forgiveness of the self and of each other. That theme runs through everything, giving the action and the humor a foundation that makes the whole thing resonate long after you’ve finished.Sistah Samurai is bold, emotional, and unapologetically itself. If you’re looking for something with real heart, real attitude, and real things to say about what it means to survive and keep going, this one’s for you.
