Synopsis:
Villains rise where nations fall.
And the Fall is coming.
Valdaris was a middling artillery captain before his people fell to a conquering rival.
Then he fell further still, snatched from the battlefield by a ruthless cult and cast into the depths of ultimate evil.
Transformed by powers he can’t begin to understand, Valdaris seeks revenge on those who tried to destroy him. Instead, he’ll face monsters beyond his most terrifying nightmares. He joins with allies caught in the chaos of his war with evil, oblivious to his true nature and the darkness closing in on their world.
Full of dragons, monsters, found family, magical weapons, intense duels, and epic battles, The Fall of Selvandrea follows a vigilante’s quest against malice, greed, and the shadow within. Heroes and villains join against the rising dark, and against a tyrant whose schemes may destroy them all.
And from calamity’s ashes, a new power shall rise.
Review:
In an epic battle between good and evil, this is just the beginning.
The Fall of Selvandrea is an epic fantasy novel with dark fantasy elements that will be sure to draw readers in and leave them begging for book two.
The Fall of Selvandrea details Valdaris’s story as he goes from the frying pan to the fire. He goes from the battlefield to find himself in a cave system with some individuals who “appear” to have saved him. But did they? Or do they have an ulterior motive in mind? Well, the way author McKay decides to take things…it’s obviously the latter.
Seriously, nobody wants to be thrown into a pit and killed by some strange creature. Don’t worry, we won’t spoil that element of the story for you. We’ll leave that for you to discover, just make sure to close your mouth at the end of the scene. It’s a jaw-dropper.
In the first few chapters of The Fall of Selvandrea, readers are introduced to three different characters. Of course, there are small details that we would encourage you to pay attention to in these first chapters as well. They will seem innocuous at the moment, but they will make reappearances later in the story. Those reappearances? They’re going to have you doing double-takes if not flipping back to the story where they were first mentioned. Yeah, it’s going to be wild.
In the first chapters, you’re going to meet Elaryn. Then Valdaris in chapter one, and then you’re going to meet Rhynwhen in chapter two. Each of these characters will play a big part in the story, but you won’t know just how big it is until you get deeper into it.
The Fall of Selvandrea focuses heavily on Valdaris. Told from the third person perspective this story will reveal little by little just how important he is to this world under threat. He can’t save this world alone, so he will have to recruit others to his side. How he goes about it is truly interesting, because it is truly an unorthodox means to an end.
Monsters and dragons will pop up in random places throughout the story. You’ll be hard-pressed to anticipate when something major is going to go down. You’ll try to do so, like a warrior heading into a fight, but not knowing when exactly it will happen.
Out of nowhere dragons will swoop down and rain down liquid fire that destroys all in its path. Mysterious monsters will lash out and wipe out entire villages with little to no warning. They’ll come sweeping out of quiet woods shrieking and attacking everything in their path leaving no survivors.
The Fall of Selvandrea will showcase epic battles with mythical weapons and magical abilities. Some will be able to stand against their abilities, while others will quickly fall. It’s a fascinating aspect of this novel that only select characters hold these unique talents.
The Fall of Selvandrea has a lot of unique elements to it. Valdaris is the focal character of the story. Author McKay makes sure that readers understand that the evil wants him out of the picture as much as possible. He is a primary threat to it, but he’s not the only one. Valdaris carries something unique inside of him, but more than that he carries secrets. Little by little the secrets will be revealed, but you’re going to need to exercise patience in discovering them. It will be worth it though.
One element that readers will appreciate is how morally gray the majority of the characters are. There are a few who hold to the good and evil being black and white, but most of the characters blur the lines. They are willing to take someone’s life or destroy something if it means that the greater good will be served. Need to flip on you for a moment in order to obtain a specific goal? Best expect it, because that is exactly the road that will be taken.
A group of heroes is being brought together one by one. Valdaris is able to see their potential and how they will impact the future of this world. However, he can’t choose for them the path that they must take that will save this world from the evil that is looking to consume it.
While the epic battle is yet to come, author McKay gives readers plenty of fights to devour throughout this book. The story starts out with Valdaris in a fight before his forced transition. But there will be fights that take place on land and sea. The detail in these battles will sweep you away as you eagerly devour the pages to see if the heroes will survive. There will be close calls, and then there will be the inevitable losses.
The Fall of Selvandrea encompasses the Rise of Dresca and Seas of Zovah while continuing the story forward with the Fall of the Selvar. At the beginning of each of these sections, readers will be treated to beautiful sketches that will depict a specific scene to come. Readers will be drawn to study them and examine every detail they can absorb before progressing forward.
The Fall of Selvandrea gives readers drama, epic fantasy, touches of horror, and a storyline that draws you in and keeps you coming back for more. Packed with twists and surprises this novel will keep readers on their toes. Beware who you think you can trust. You just never know what will be revealed.
Hate cliffhangers? Well, since this is book one of the Draemeir Chronicles you know it’s coming. LOL! The way it’s written the cliffhanger isn’t that bad. The end of The Fall of Selvandrea will absolutely build the intrigue as to what author McKay will have for us next. The war wages on and we look forward to reuniting with Valdaris and those who have managed to survive.
