Review:
I AM ADDICTED.
I cannot express how much I ATE this up.
At Sorrowsong University in Scotland, scholarship student Ophelia investigates her parents’ deaths whilst being drawn in (and hating it) by Alex, the son of her prime suspect.
It’s a dark academia romance with mental health representation, angsty romance, a suspense/thriller subplot, and quirky characters.
The characters were the highlight. They’re quirky and have spiralling thoughts that are relatable. It felt like the author had a look at my thoughts. Whacky intrusions, random pondering, out there musings.
The chemistry between these two is SIZZLING. I was giggling and smirking throughout. I lived for their back-and-forth.
It was being in both of their heads. I truly FELT for these characters. They’ve been through it, and they recognise each other’s vulnerability and strength.
Alex is just so deadpan:
Maybe it’s a therapy conversation. Hey, Dr. Harwood, I have Daddy issues and I want legs as earmuffs, help.
What really worked for me was the audiobook. Dual narrated and INCREDIBLE. The accents truly elevated this and now I need these two narrators to work on more with these exact character types.
Alex’s care for his family (his sisters and mother) was so deeply touching. The ride-or-die friendships were another highlight too.
Yes, you have to suspend your belief a bit (especially with the constant jet setting and timings between New York and Scotland).
Yep, the ending was unfairly cruel.
Yes, I have the arc for book two, but am fighting between the desire to wait for the audio and gobbling up more.
