SYNOPSIS

My name’s Griz. My childhood wasn’t like yours. I’ve never had friends, and in my whole life I’ve not met enough people to play a game of football.

My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, but we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other, and our dogs.

Then the thief came.

There may be no law left except what you make of it. But if you steal my dog, you can at least expect me to come after you.

Because if we aren’t loyal to the things we love, what’s the point?

REVIEW

Thanks to @hachettebooks and @librofm for the audiobook listening copy. This is my first time trying out audiobook and I definitely need more time to get used to it.

In essence, this book is such a beautiful work! Fletcher writes (and narrates) so beautifully and his quotes in this book are so impactful! The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world whereby the population of humankind decreased tremendously due to the Gelding (we do not know why or how the Gelding happened but that is not the point of this book). We follow Griz in his journey to save his dog, Jess, who was stolen by a stranger, Brand, who visited his island for trading purposes. The story is very detail oriented as the descriptions of the surroundings throughout Griz’s adventure were beautifully captured in Flecther’s words. The world building is thus very well done.

The story was told in Griz’s point of view and to be honest, the first half of the book (before Griz met John Dark) is rather slow paced as its basically like Griz talking to himself. But then it gets so interesting and especially with the 2 major plot twists as well as some very heartbreaking moments, my rating for this book went up to a strong 4/5 star. I loved and enjoyed reading Griz’s relationship with his dogs, Jip and Jess. I am a dog person and I understand how loyal and kind a dog can be.

This story teaches us to appreciate the little things that is happening around us. We have the privilege of everything right now and we tend to take advantage of what life had given us it without even being appreciative of it. I love how Fletcher instill such insights in this story, and I definitely will follow his works in future!
