Review: The Blacktongue Thief (Blacktongue #1) by Christopher Buehlman

May 21, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

The Blacktongue Thief is the first installment in Christopher Buehlman’s new Blacktongue series, published by Tor Books. I have to say I really love this book, as it has so many aspects of an adventure fantasy that I enjoy.

Review: Anna by Sammy H.K. Smith

May 12, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Anna is an upcoming release by veteran author Sammy H.K. Smith, and, wow, honestly it left me speechless. Which is a really interesting thing to say about a book that could really encourage a lot of dialogue. Anna’s story was a brutal read at times and joyful at others, but it was always enthralling.

Review: The Helm of Midnight (The Five Penalties #1) by Marina J. Lostetter

May 7, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

The Helm of Midnight is the first in Marina Lostetter’s The Five Penalties Series, and the author’s first fantasy novel, according to her bio in the back of the book. I love the premise of this book, and, while in the end it did not keep my interest as much as I had hoped, Lostetter definitely showed off her writing chops.

Review: Stone & Shield (Fall of Emros #1) by Thomas J. Devens

May 4, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Stone & Shield is the first release in Thomas J. Devens’ Fall of Emros series. It was written in a classical fantasy style and in multiple POVs. I like the story, and I think the writing is technically very sound.

Mini-Review: Hard Reboot by Django Wexler

April 30, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Hard Reboot is a lot of fun, and I think it is really well-rounded for a novella. I was impressed at how author Django Wexler was able to incorporate so many different aspects of a story into only 150 pages.

Review: Day Zero by C. Robert Cargill

April 27, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Day Zero is a prequel to Cargill’s 2017 release Sea of Rust (which I did not know until my cohort Justin pointed it out in his review). Though not a perfect read, I found this to be worthwhile: definitely entertaining and a little thought-provoking.

Review: Son of the Storm (The Nameless Republic #1) by Suyi Davies Okungbowa

April 21, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Son of the Storm is the first installment in Suyi Davies Okunbowa’s The Nameless Republic series, and if it is any indication of how the rest of this series is going to go I have a feeling it is going to be quite a hit. In my opinion, this book has many elements that make it a really good read.

Book Tour + Signed Book Giveaway: Chaos Rising (Nine World Chronicles #2) by Lyra Wolf

April 15, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Chaos Rising is book 2 in Lyra Wolf’s Nine World Chronicles, and the third release in the series (click on the links to find my reviews of the previous books Lies, Knives, and Apples and Truth and Other Lies). I have really enjoyed this series from beginning to end. The characters are interesting, the storyline is fascinating and suspenseful, and I love the Norse vibes.

Mini-Review: Lies, Knives, and Apples (Nine World Chronicles #0.5) by Lyra Wolf

April 13, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

Lies, Knives, and Apples is a novella set in Lyra Wolf’s Norse-inspired Nine World Chronicles universe. This is going to be a mini review, as the book is only 75 pages long. I enjoyed this side story, for the most part, though there is one big issue I want to discuss.

Review: The Shadow of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga #1) by John Gwynne

April 8, 2021 by Traveling Cloak (Jason) Leave a Comment

The Shadow of the Gods is the first book in John Gwynne’s Bloodsworn Saga, and if it is any indication as to how the rest of the series is going to go, readers are in for quite a treat. I enjoyed this book immensely.
