To bring an absolutely stellar year of interviewing to a close, I’m excited to be sharing my conversation with Steph Nelson! Steph is the author of The Vein, Sawtooth, The Final Scene, and most recently, The Threshing Floor. While our conversation mostly centers around this novel, we do discuss many other things such as:
– Setting the pace and maintaining momentum in writing
– Discussing the differences between horror and thriller genres
– Breaking the mold of some thriller plot-points
– Writing a personal novel such as The Threshing Floor
– Evaluating relationships between reading and writing
– Taking inspiration and note of “what works” in current fiction
– Writing romance within the thriller/horror landscape
– Breaking down the process of writing human characters
– How beta readers can enhance a story
– Reading horror for catharsis
We also throw around a few movies, books, and authors so here’s a list of those:
– Murder Road by Simone St. James
– American Rapture by CJ Leede
– So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison
– The Substance
– Horror for Weenies by Emily Hughes
– The Return by Rachel Harrison
– If You Lie by Caleb Stephens
– 11/22/63 by Stephen King
– Day of the Door by Laurel Hightower
Getting to chat with Steph felt like a full circle moment for me. I picked up The Vein back in August of 2023 just when I began reviewing horror books, and being able to keep up with her stories since then has been such a delight. I cannot thank her enough for her time!
Additionally, this is most likely my last author interview for 2024. I want to express my gratitude for every person who has watched, shared, or supported this thing over the last few months. It has definitely been a step out of my comfort zone, but I also treasure every conversation so dearly. I’ll still be sharing book reviews and posting bookish content on my other social media platforms for the remainder of the year, but for now, this is a farewell until 2025!
