And I’m back from my summer hiatus!
Here is my conversation with the one and only, Clay McLeod Chapman! Clay is the author of many, many books such as Whisper Down the Lane, Ghost Eaters, and What Kind of Mother. As of this week, his novelette, Stay on the Line, is out in the world from Shortwave Publishing. His upcoming releases include a novella from Bad Hand Books titled Kill Your Darling (one of my FAVORITE things I’ve read from Clay) in September, a comic series from Dark Horse titled Seance in the Asylum in October, AND a novel titled Wake Up and Open Your Eyes from Quirk Books in January. See, Clay really IS one of horror’s busiest authors!
We wander all over the place in this interview that’s actually more of a conversation in the end. Such topics include:
– the intense humidity of the South
– how podcasting is leading the charge for interviews
– the importance of setting
– books we love (see full title list below)
– the joy of reading advanced copies
– the differences between novelettes and novellas
– how Brandywine may just be Clay’s Castle Rock
– grief horror (includes discussions of both Stay on the Line and Kill Your Darling)
– how effectively scary clear plastic sheets are
– the barriers of the 5 star book rating system
– our love for indie horror publishing
– the much anticipated release of Wake Up and Open Your Eyes
These are just the high points as we talk about all things horror fiction, reading, and writing. Here’s a list of all the books/authors we mention:
– Pay the Piper by Daniel Kraus and George Romero
– American Rapture by CJ Leede
– The Dissonance by Shaun Hamill
– The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
– Edenville by Sam Rebelein
– So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison
– Erin E. Adams
– Eric Larocca
– Letter to the Purple Satin Killer by Joshua Chaplinsky
– Mouth by Joshua Hull
This is one of my favorite conversations, and I am so thankful for Clay’s time and immense kindness. He is truly one of the pillars of positivity in the horror community, and I cannot wait for his upcoming releases to be out in the world. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!
