At the time I started collecting these, I believe I had made an offhand comment about wondering if Stine was the most published author ever. That’s all it took, and my partner at the time suggested we try collecting them all. For months, we had ThriftBooks coming in weekly doubling the collection. I think we had both had them as kids, but they were lost to time sadly.
Over time, there have been just a truly insane amount of these books and even spinoffs series, and the goal for me is to collect them all. Sans perhaps some of the truly insanely priced ones because damn. Or maybe I’ll hit the lotto.
I think for this spotlight I’ll include the actual pictures off my instagram for each series as I did a bit of a spotlight there over the summer when I did a #GoosebumpsJuly set of reads.
I am truly sorry for any horrible compression on the photos that may follow
Series Blurb
Goosebumps is a series of horror novels written by American author R. L. Stine. The protagonists in these stories are teens or pre-teens who find themselves in frightening circumstances, often involving the supernatural, the paranormal, or the occult.
_
I’m pretty confident that any reader has heard of these, but I figured I’d include a little series blurb anyway. These middle grade books have proven they can stand the test of time, and it’s insane just how many of them have become nostalgic re-reads for older readers too.

The original 62 books by R.L. Stine. This is where it all started. Reader beware – you’re in for a scare!
Here are all 62 books, several of which I would like to replace to have a full set of 1st editions.

Goosebumps House of Shivers
The only thing to fear . . . is everything. Twins Betty and Billy are visiting their Uncle Wendell at his secluded house in the Wayward Forest. What they think is going to be a boring stay quickly turns into a real nightmare. Wendell is in possession of the scariest book in the world. And someone is after Wendell. To keep the book safe, the siblings will have to plunge directly into the heart of the dangerous forest. There they must escape manbats, cannibal crows, and giant insects, among other horrors-and make it out alive!
So far I’ve gotten the first two from NetGalley, but I’ve only grabbed the first one in paperback. This series is currently going on!
Special Shoutout: Goosebumps Gold
This series was canceled during the legal issues between Parachute and Scholastic. The books never released. Sadly it looks like it could have been some of the coolest art pieces!
Adaptations
As usual, I was not going to get out of this without mentioning the adaptations of course!
The OG TV series! Of course for many of kids, probably myself included, the TV show acted as a gateway for fans to find the series. As a young kid, I was not good at reading, actually having to do extra schooling to learn (personally I did Kumon Learning) so the show was more than likely the first thing that introduced me to everything. And of course it’s kind of cool to go back now and see the young actors that went on to become bigger stars. And of course TV Slappy still haunts my dreams. And the theme song still slaps.
I was kind of excited for these, mostly because of Jack Black honestly, but also for the chance for some pretty solid CGI to take a crack at the series. They’re okay, and mostly just enjoyable for what they are. I’ve watched them more than once though, so that’s something.
This is the latest adaptation and it’s for Disney+ and Hulu. It was enjoyable, interesting enough to keep me watching, and kind of cool that it’s more of a YA aimed show than a middle grade one. The definitely teen cast makes me think age-wise more along the lines of Fear Street, so that was cool to see. I do wish they had just gone with a storyline that dealt in any of the countless books that have not been adapted, rather than a mixture of the originals and whatever they wanted to do, as it feels kind of more like a reboot attempt. I would watch another season though to see where it goes. And Justin Long really out here giving us his all.
If by chance you’re new here, I highly recommend the original series, the TV shows, and any of the holiday-centered ones for places to start. If you’re not into middle grade reads, which is fine, these are also a great place to get kids into spooky reads and horror!
