Yellow Tape and Coffee starts with a murder mystery that could have world changing consequences. Told from many intersecting POV’s with varying motivations, this novel almost feels like reading an HBO mini-series, or a plus-sized episode of The X-Files or Supernatural. Agendas clash, alliances are made and broken in this story or conspiracy, trust and werewolves.
Pat Luther does a bang up job of establishing characters and setting, dropping the reader into a very well realized Portland, Oregon. With a large cast of distinct and memorable characters, Yellow Tape and Coffee moves at a brisk pace despite its 700+ page count. Every scene is necessary to establish character and tension, with twists upon twists. Once I thought I had a grasp on the endgame, Luthor would pull the rug in a surprising and satisfying way.
One of the things I really enjoyed about Yellow Tape and Coffee was the variety of the different characters we are introduced to. Many different races and ethnicities, as well as a wide array of ages, there’s a little something for everyone. All the characters are strong and independent, with their own agency and those agencies are what the drive the plot.
Yellow Tape and Coffee is a fantastic hybrid of urban fantasy, horror and drama that will keep you guessing until the end. Secret societies, buried history, werewolves and conspiracies combine to create a suspenseful thrill-ride that will keep on the edge of your seat and guessing until it’s bloody conclusion. Pat Luther handles the vast array of characters with a deft hand and the skill some television writer’s rooms can’t muster. What are you waiting for? It won’t bite…
