Review: What the Echoes Say by B.C. Rico

March 27, 2024 by The Wulvers Library Leave a Comment

Rating: 8/10

Synopsis

“How far would you go to save a friend? Would you start a war? Would you kill a king?”

Kel is born into a family of spies in a land torn apart by war. Savage creatures stalk the realm in its aftermath. Kel’s best friend was orphaned by the conflict, and when he goes missing it’s up to Kel to bring him home.

Ahni, a princess from an island nation, manifests magic and is swept away from the palace to the Academy, a testing ground for channelers run by an ancient order shrouded in secrecy.

And at the center of it all, a boy, heir to a fallen empire. The echoes of war have hollowed him out on the inside, and in the emptiness an ancient evil has taken root. Its shadow threatens the world.

Review

What the Echoes Say by B.C. Rico was an amazing introduction to their work and I’m more thane eager to find out what happens to the characters next.

I think we all know my love for multi-POV fantasy stories and this one really kept me gripped through. Which is hard to do these days when you feel like you’ve read everything in one way or another. The short, snappy sentences were filled with enough description to keep me intrigued and I’m always a massive fan of a longer book with shorter chapters. This let me connect with the characters more and meant that the pacing of the novel was handled well and didn’t let up at any stage.

The plot itself is one that you have to keep a close eye on. Everything was expertly woven throughout and I was eager to find out more about the world itself and what is happening. We are thrust into this at the very start and I was glad of this instead of a slow set up. In doing so, the story just kept going from strength to strength and never let up. There were dark moments that were relevant to the story and didn’t feel like being added just for the shock value.

I enjoyed this one and am excitedly curious for where BC Rico goes next.

About The Wulvers Library

My name is Graham, reading as The Wulvers Library. I'm from Scotland and have been reading from a young age but this fell off through my teenage years. In my adult life, I fell back in love with reading when I picked up Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time and Ursula K Le Guin's Earthsea and was fascinated by these worlds, characters, and stories. From there I've read mostly fantasy, some sci-fi and horror and try to dabble in other genres. My favourite authors include Robert Jordan, JRR Tolkien, Ryan Cahill, Ursula K Le Guin and Brandon Sanderson. I'm a massive fan of indie books, and some of my favourite series are from indie authors so I'm always on the lookout for some hidden gems.

When I'm not reading, I love spending being a film addict with my girlfriend or visiting small towns and scouting some rare finds in their charity shops.

I'm happy to be part of the book community and blame them all for the lack of shelf space and inability to pass by a bookstore without stepping inside.
