Review:
I was sent an early copy of The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk in exchange for an honest review.
Aaaaand Broadbent continues to cement herself as a must-read author for me. Where this book could have followed the usual romantasy pattern (the couple get together and then are immediately separated for an entire book) Broadbent breaks that and allows Mische and Asar to reunite early on.
I’d argue that we were lower in the romance here and higher on the fantasy plot, and Broadbent can craft a good fantasy plot that is easy to follow, but yet you don’t quite know where it’s going to go. I would argue that you should go into The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk having read all of the other Crowns of Nyaxia books, as it is very much a connected series of books. There are references back to other books and people, and I think the reading experience is really uplifted by having read everything else.
So much happens in this book. It’s such a journey, and you’re thrown straight into the action from page 1. It doesn’t relent until the very end, and even then there’s still more to come in book 5. I don’t think I’ve ever been so grateful for the pace at which Broadbent’s book are published…
I love Mische and Asar, I love their relationship, how they work together and just everything that comes with their story. They are sent on essentially a quest to gather some *very* important items, and I think the real strength of this book is that the quest format harkens back to old-school fantasy. While the book is fresh and firmly in the romantasy genre, the addition of the quest format adds a nostalgic layer for me that just made me love the book even more.
If you haven’t already started the Crowns of Nyaxia series, please do. The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk is an epic journey that will keep you reading into the early hours.
