Review: The Blood that Burns the Winter Snow by Ryan Cahill (a short story from The Bound and the Broken)

May 30, 2024 by Tom Bookbeard 1 Comment

Rating: 9/10

Now let’s get something clear. I love Ryan Cahill, you love Ryan Cahill, and I’m pretty sure Ryan Cahill loves Ryan Cahill too. We’re all used to Cahill’s TBR shelf-destroying books at this point. So, we need to bring attention to the fact that there’s a new short story seemingly out of nowhere in the Bound and the Broken series.

And this isn’t like the whole is The Ice actually a novella or is it not just a short novel controversy either. The Blood that Burns the Winter Snow is a vignette set in the world of Epheria. Specifically, it gives a tantalising titbit of Vars’ backstory (Vars being the father of Calen, the main character of the series).

While this is short it certainly isn’t short on action and suspense. The flash fiction format suits Cahill well and feels like a scene fresh out of the bigger books of the series. It reads a little like John Gwynne dusted off his chainmail and stepped into Epheria for a jar of mead.

For anyone yet to read anything by Cahill this is a great way to enter the series and get a feel for a standout indie author. There’s a reason Cahill is so widely well-regarded and it’s evident on every page of this story. Albeit there aren’t many pages.

It’s out on Kindle June 11th. Click the buttons up there so you can get yourself a copy, pour a mead, and enjoy a well-earned 15-minute reading break.
