Synopsis:
NEVER BARGAIN WITH A REAPER.
The city of Aravell is in peril, plagued by a deadly blackmist that kills all it touches and reapers who roam the streets, leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.
Seventeen-year-old reaper hunter Viridia Solace has made it her life’s mission to capture their leader―the man who murdered her parents―but the notorious Reaper Priest has eluded the best hunters on Elverdine Isle for years.
Until now.
When the Priest’s right-hand man, Reeve Ashton, is captured, he offers Viri a chance to avenge her parents . . . for a price. She knows better than to bargain with a reaper, especially this one, but his offer is too good to resist.
Only, trusting Reeve comes with a heavy cost, and soon Viri risks losing everything . . . including her heart.
Review:
Lynette Noni might be one of my favourite Young Adult authors.
17-year-old Viri is a hunter, desperate to avenge her parents who were killed by a Reaper – criminals who reap magic and life force.
To take down the Reaper Priest, she must form an uneasy alliance with a young Reaper – too cocky and good-looking for his own good.
The found family will have you grinning. The banter will have you giggling and kicking your feet. You will swoon and gasp at the reveals (and there are many).
Oh, and there’s a rabbit called Walnut with separation anxiety.
He wasn’t pretty—there was something too dark and dangerous about him to be called that—but he was without a doubt beautiful to behold. He’d been cute seven years ago, but now … Now he was devastating.
Yes, there are a lot of tropes here (and I am a known hater of the current romantasy trend of cramming a checklist in), but Noni keeps them fresh and swoon-worthy rather than repetitive and cringy.
There’s a literal dun dun dun moment, and I don’t say that lightly.
I guessed a few of the twists early on, but one completely blindsided me. I do think it tried to fit one or three too many twists in, especially for a book one.
Yes, there are (frustratingly) one too many plot conveniences, but that’s a staple of YA.
Overall, an addictive romantasy from an auto-buy author.
