SYNOPSIS
Welcome to Prehistoric Park—
Is something no longer said in these remote Michigan woods.
After a freak accident took the life of the co-owner, the long-abandoned theme park grew wild. Home to little more than decaying structures, resin dinosaur statues, and a mythic recluse, converging outsiders hope to find opportunity, nostalgia, family, and vengeance in the forgotten tourist attraction. But a storm is brewing, and the electrified air has more in store for the visitors than they could ever imagine.
REVIEW
More Carnosaur than Jurassic Park, Reanimated Rex is an absolute bloody blast. Full of intrigue and suspense, this is the dinosaur horror story you’ve always wanted.
We begin our story with Sam and Carly, no, not from iCarly. This Sam is male and, too be frank, an asshole. Very quickly, Sam is shown to be misogynistic and entitled, belittling Carly often and with glee. While at the park, they run into a few other characters and together they discover this park is not as it seems.
Now it wouldn’t be a spoiler to say the dinosaurs are more than just statues and they are terrifying. Ebenstein’s writing is as sharp as a dinosaur’s claws, the characters vivid and believable, bringing an emotional weight to something that could have easily been B-Movie schlock in less capable hands.
Campy but never silly, what really makes Reanimated Rex work is how seriously Ebenstein takes this material. What could easily be a gore-fest filled with unlikable characters, instead what we get is a creepy, violent descent into one man’s madness brought on by loss and the devastating consequences.
Reanimated Rex is imaginative, fast paced, brutal, full of suspense and begs to be read in one sitting. This story hits the ground running and devours you like a pack of Compsognathus.
