Review: Prey of Angels (The Hybrid Helix #8) by J.C.M. Berne

February 3, 2026 by A.J. Calvin Leave a Comment

Rating: /10

Synopsis:

Rohan has been building alliances and solidifying his abilities, all to keep his friends, his family, his homeworld, and the Empire safe from anything that threatens them, from anywhere in the universe, whether from inside the sector or from a distant galaxy.

He thought he was doing a pretty good job.

He thought he had a pretty solid handle on what he needed to worry about.

He was wrong.

Review:

Note: I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

With every turn of the Hybrid Helix series, things get more complicated for Rohan and his friends on Wistful.

With Turn Eight, characters like Dhruv, Masamune, Wei Li, and the Director return, some to help, others to…well, if you know anything about Dhruv, he usually just makes things more difficult for Rohan. And as the cover suggests, Terry, Rohan’s sort-of pet kaiju/pterodactyl makes a few appearances too.

There are some brand new characters who show up to cause trouble, and in typical fashion, Rohan is trying to save the galaxy from three threats at once, while also trying to solve why they’re attacking Wistful (or him) at all. And of course, nobody wants to negotiate peacefully.

I’ve come to expect a lot of action, banter, and pop culture references that make me laugh aloud while reading this series, and Prey of Angels didn’t disappoint. We haven’t seen much of my favorite space bear, Ang, for a couple books, but he was back in the fray here—and with some fantastic lines. He and Rohan had much fighting to do, and a big mystery surrounding Ang’s girlfriend, Katya, to solve.

While some things are resolved by the end of this book, I really had the sense that it was setting things up for the next installment (or three.) And there are still some things that haven’t been fully explored from the previous books too. I’m excited to see where the series goes next.

I don’t know how long the planned series is, but it doesn’t really matter—I’ll be along for the ride. The Hybrid Helix books are a ton of fun. If you’re new to the series, it begins with Wistful Ascending.

Prey of Angels is available for preorder and will release February 17, 2026.
