Synopsis
Much like accountants, fey never forget a debt.
Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated.
Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric co-workers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won’t be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.
Remnants of the past that could put Fred, and his students, in mortal peril.
Review
The penultimate book in the Fred, The Vampire Accountant series, this one took a slightly different angle to previous titles. Although there was a bit of world expansion, it wasn’t a huge amount – in fact, this entry was contained entirely in one (new) location. There were a few new characters introduced, and a few curve balls thrown in, but it wasn’t a “raise the stakes higher than they’ve ever been before” which I quite enjoyed
Although there was plenty of action, mystery, secrets, and surprises, it felt very much like the calm before the storm of the finale.
We have expanded the cast (although I do miss our old, core team from earlier instalments), learn more about the forever thorn in our side, Quinn, and meet a few new types of parahuman. I always appreciate Deborah’s inclusion (she really keeps things interesting in every scene she’s in), though I missed the lack of Gideon.
This was a single story rather than several bundled together, which made it feel much more cohesive and “ramping up” before the concluding volume. Especially the ending, where we really saw some growth from Fred.
It felt like a much quicker read than the ones before it, too. I’m ready for the finale now!
Once again narrated by a full cast of excellent voice actors, the graphic audio is a fantastic way to enjoy this story!
