Review: New Sword Smell (A Splatter Elf Collection) by Philip Overby

December 2, 2024 by Alan Behan 1 Comment

Rating: 9.5/10

Synopsis

Includes naughty language and splattery violenceIn the chaotic, gore-slicked world of Groteskia, everyone owns a sword, but few know how to use them. Enter Katzia of Clovenhoof aka the Splatter Elf, Number 6 on the Crystalline Crab Top Ten, the elite list of monster hunting celebrities that scrape and claw their way to the top. Katzia not only excels at slashing and stabbing, but she has also developed an obsession with collecting swords. Her affinity for blades puts her at odds with rival hunters, cannibals, crazed monsters and even her own sword-hoarding warlock father. Maybe she’ll find the real things worth collecting are the friends she made along the way? Who in the turquoise hell knows?

New Sword Smell collects several loosely connected short stories with Katzia and other hunters in the Splatter Elf universe. Contains the a goblin-killing world record attempt, a unicorn-eater with insatiable hunger, brain-eating imps, mechs, witches, mech-witches, cannibals, talking severed heads, severed heads in general, maggot sorcery, tooth magic, a hungry chainsaw, wagons full of swords and much more!

Review

That was pure splattery gore ridden filt, and I loved every bloody hilarious moment of it. I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud, so much while reading a book, and I mean every short story will leave you in stitches.

Philip Overby has put something wonderful and very clever here together. He has absolutely turned the old tropes on their head and has given us a Monty Python style fantasy read that will take you on a wild and loony unpredictable adventure of a mad sword collecting half elf.

If you’re looking for something new and refreshing, that will just leave you crying with laughter. A New Sword Smell, The Spatter Collection has it all, insane monsters, insane characters, insane gods, mad wizards, lots of swords, gorey, and gooey battles, and there is just so much more that will have you glued this comedic master piece.

What I absolutely loved about this fun read is the crazy and genius names of the characters, towns, and places. I would love to have whatever the author was taking while writing this hilarious tale of madness. It’s just one of those reads that will stay with me for a long time, and the Splatter Elf is a read that everyone needs to get their hands on when released.

In this classic tale, Katzia is a half elf mercenary and monster hunter. Her payment for her custom is her love of magical and fancy swords. In competition with her warlock father to have the most and famous swords to their collection. Katzia is determined to own more than her father and will take on any job that could cost her her life as long as she gets paid in legendary swords.

A brilliantly slashing tale from start to finish. Ghoulish goblins, stabby unicorns, and head exploding imps. Check it out. You won’t regret it, very highly recommended…🗡⚔️🔥💀🧝‍♀️
