Synopsis
The ravaged continent of Genabackis has given birth to a terrifying new empire: the Pannion Domin. Like a fanatical tide of corrupted blood, it seethes across the land, devouring all who fail to heed the Word of its elusive prophet, the Pannion Seer. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Dujek Onearm’s Host and the Bridgeburners – each now outlawed by the Empress – alongside their enemies of old including the grim forces of Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, and his Tiste Andii, and the Rhivi people of the Plains. Outnumbered and mistrustful, they must get word to potential allies, including the mercenary brotherhood, the Grey Swords, whose orders are to hold the besieged city of Capustan at all costs.
But more ancient clans too are gathering. As if in answer to some primal summons, the massed ranks of the undead T’lan Imass have risen. For it would seem something altogether darker and more malign threatens the very substance of this world. The Warrens are poisoned and rumours abound that the Crippled God is now unchained and intent on a terrible revenge…
Review
Memories will haunt me. It will follow me till the day I die. Damn what a truly epic master piece, each and every time you do a reread, Hood will be there to embrace your soul. Mr Erikson, thank you for bringing this amazing series into the world of fantasy.
Memories of Ice is the third instalment in this timely classic series that is the phenomenal Malazan Book of the Fallen. If you thought Deadhouse Gates ripped your soul from your body, Memories of Ice absolutely obliterates it. A tale that will stay with you forever.
The Malazan world just gets better and better. The absolute depth and worldbuilding are incredible. Eriksons attention to detail, his ability to draw you in with his storytelling, the dialogue between the characters, and prose is just so damn good.
Memories will introduce you to lots of more amazing new characters, and my old favourites return to the fold. One such character you will absolutely love is the Shield Anvil Itkovian of the Grey Swords of Elingarth. If you love a good, bloody, drenched tale with epic battles, and I mean absolutely and literally bloody, this book has it all, Cannibalism, Mortal swords, Zombie Dinosaurs with sword chopping arms, Hilarious Necromancers and the one and only Bridgeburners are back with a bang.
In this third instalment, We are in the city of Capustan, the Grey Swords, a religious, mercenary company, who have been hired to defend the city from the approaching army of the Pannion Seer. As the Pannion Seer approaches, they face the impossible task of saving the city from the cannibal horde and the demonic undead about to tear them apart. Old enemies will be united to face an evil and magical force that has been corrupted by unseen players. Gods will die, and you will see the darkside and depravity that is human nature.
What a powerful and truly moving story of these unique groups of characters. If you have never read the Malazan Book of the Fallen, Hood, what are you waiting for, I very, very highly recommend…🧟♂️🗡🪓🐯☠️🦖
