Review: Jade Shards by Fonda Lee

December 2, 2025 by Lauren Leave a Comment

Rating: 9/10

Synopsis

Fonda Lee returns to the acclaimed Green Bone Saga with four prequel short stories that delve into the personal histories of the Kaul and Ayt families.

The Witch and Her Friend. Before she was the ruthless leader of the Mountain clan, Ayt Mada was an orphan without friends at school except for one: Aun Ure, a teenage girl feared and renowned as an assassin but yearning for a simpler life.

Not Only Blood. Before he was the heir apparent of the No Peak clan, Kaul Lan challenged his grandfather and clan patriarch to help a boy who had lost everything.

Better Than Jade. Before they were married, Kaul Hilo and Maik Wen were a young couple facing long odds: the son of a top Green Bone clan in love with a stone-eye girl from a disreputable family.

Granddaughter Cormorant. Before she left and returned to Kekon, Kaul Shae was the apple of her grandfather’s eye…as well as a daring secret informer to a foreign country. Contains an introduction and story notes by the author.

Review

A thrilling return to the world of the Greenbone Saga! The moment I put the audiobook on, I was transported back to Kekon, and thrilled to be among these amazing characters again.

I don’t re-read books, but I suddenly have an urge to read the whole trilogy again 😀

These were short stories giving us snippets into some of the characters’ lives, pre-Jade City. We got to see some of them at their best and strongest, in ways we only imagined while reading the mainline novels.

Although these are prequel stories, the whole collection feels like an epilogue – a goodbye to these characters we’ve come to know and love so very well. It reminded me how much I loved and missed this world, in all its fierce, violent, tragic glory, and how central family is to this saga.

When it ended, I was sad, and had hoped for even more tales from this world.

If you read the trilogy and want more, this will definitely scratch that itch!
