Review: How Lexi Walker Almost Saved the World (Lexi Walker Series 1) by Frances Wong

December 3, 2025 by Nick Snape Leave a Comment

Rating: /10

Synopsis:

Twelve-year-old Lexi Walker has always felt like there’s more to her small town than meets the eye. One day, her hunch is proven true when a mysterious Orb crash-lands into her life. With the help of her best friend Tim, Lexi embarks on a daring mission to capture the Orb and uncover the secrets of Rosewell.

But when Lexi’s impulsive nature leads to unexpected consequences, she finds herself imbued with powerful magic and lost in an incredible alien world hidden beneath the town library. Caught up in the wonder of it all, Lexi forgets her original mission and becomes determined to explore this new world.

However, when a group of Orb Hunters arrive seeking to steal the powerful artifact, Lexi faces an impossible choice. Should she keep her newfound powers and newfound world a secret, or risk everything to protect the Orb and her friend Tim? With action-packed adventure and heart-pumping thrills, join Lexi and Tim on their journey through the alien world.

Review:

What’s Snape doing now? Reviewing a science fiction book for children?

Yes.

And a brilliant one too!

My dim and not-so distant past was spent as a headteacher (principal for those of you on the other side of the Atlantic) with a deep-seated drive to teach children to read. My experience focuses on the very early years, special needs, and later across the whole 3-11-year age range, so to get the chance to champion a children’s book is something special. So I will.

Wong has written a lively, bright opener to the Lexi Walker series, filled with the exploits of Lexi, an impulsive 12-year-old, and her best friend Tim. After discovering the Orb, they are both thrown into a rollercoaster adventure where all is not always as it seems as they try to save the Orb from those who seek to use it for all the wrong reasons.

The prose kept me engaged throughout, and the book is written perfectly for the age of the target audience. The language is far from staid, which can be the bane of children’s books, and rip-roars you through at a tremendous pace while adding moments of contemplation. And best of all, it’s perfect for anyone in that difficult 9+ age bracket, be they a precocious younger reader or someone older one seeking something different in their reading.

Lexi Walker and friends are the perfect company for children who love an adventure. Parents, this is a series well worth getting hold of.

About Nick Snape

Nick Snape has been steeped in Science Fiction and Fantasy since his friends first dragged him from his schoolwork and stuck a book under his nose. Lost to the world of imagination, he became a teacher by accident, though he thoroughly enjoyed developing the joy of reading and writing in his pupils. Having retired after thirty years, he thought it was high time to practise what he preached.
Nick's books feature everything from all out, heart-pounding, fast-paced action to thoughtful, character driven twists on the fantasy and sci-fi genres. Genetics to Artificial Intelligence, Artifice Dragons to Soul-Eating enemies, nothing is off the menu.
