Review: Golden Son (Red Rising Series #2) by Pierce Brown

January 4, 2024 by Alan Behan Leave a Comment

Rating: 10/10

Synopsis

As a Red, Darrow grew up working the mines deep beneath the surface of Mars, enduring backbreaking labor while dreaming of the better future he was building for his descendants. But the Society he faithfully served was built on lies. Darrow’s kind have been betrayed and denied by their elitist masters, the Golds—and their only path to liberation is revolution. And so Darrow sacrifices himself in the name of the greater good for which Eo, his true love and inspiration, laid down her own life. He becomes a Gold, infiltrating their privileged realm so that he can destroy it from within.

A lamb among wolves in a cruel world, Darrow finds friendship, respect, and even love—but also the wrath of powerful rivals. To wage and win the war that will change humankind’s destiny, Darrow must confront the treachery arrayed against him, overcome his all-too-human desire for retribution—and strive not for violent revolt but a hopeful rebirth. Though the road ahead is fraught with danger and deceit, Darrow must choose to follow Eo’s principles of love and justice to free his people.

He must live for more.

Review

Omg that was absolutely incredible. But Pierce Brown has just ripped my bloody heart out and stamped all over it. That ending has just left me in such despair, like It was like I was reliving the red wedding from ASOIAF all over again, and now I’m just numb.

Red Rising was amazing, but Golden Son has blown book one to smithereens. You never know what was coming next. The plot developments were totally unexpected, leaving your head spinning with so many unbelievable twists and turns.

Golden Son is the second book in the Red Rising series and Pierce Brown’s writing, and worldbuilding is just out of this world. It is difficult to put into words to describe this book. Simply stating it is amazing just doesn’t do it justice, I am in awe of Pierce Brown ability to weave such a compelling, complex, and intriguing story and create so many brilliant characters.

After only reading two books, Pierce Brown, in my opinion, is up there with my favourite authors, Steven Erikson, Mark Lawrence, Joe Abercrombie, and Robert Jordan. I’m sold on sci-fi for life, and I still have another four books to go. If the first two are this good, I can only imagine what I’m in for next, especially after being left with that cliffhanger of the century.

If you love, a story that sets your heart racing with its fast-paced setting from the get-go, action scenes that are so intense with battles and political manoeuvring, with betrayal, murder, waring families, you will absolutely love this series that the author has brought to our lives.

Break the chains. In this block buster of book, The Reaper Darrow has made it through the Institute and secured a patronage from one of the most powerful men on Mars, the man who stole his life as Red and destroyed his whole world. Darrow has continued his studies in warfare and leadership and commanding fleets of ships in epic space battles.

After embedding himself into the Gold ruling classes and society, with the help from the Sons of Aries, he must sow desent between the Gold families by making new alliances and friendships by working very hard using all skills he has learnt and developed and with any opportunity to try break them apart from within with civil war.

Now, for the third book, Morning Star, oh god, my nerves already are gone just thinking what the first chapter is going to reveal. If you haven’t checked this out series yet, I very highly recommend that you do….😁⚡️🗡🔥😮

About Alan Behan

Right a bit about myself, I am married to my wonderful wife Catherine of 18 years, we have three beautiful girls together, 20, 18 and 14 years of age. They are my world as well as my books...😁 I work full time as industrial plumber, I'm 45 years old and my hobbies is spending time with my family and of course reading fantasy every chance I can get. I love supporting indie authors and getting the word out about their new books. My all-time favorite authors are Steven Erikson, Mark Lawrence and Robert Jordan and that's just to name a few.
