Synopsis:
In the desert city of Achten Tan, built within the bones of a long-dead leviathan, there’s one truth everyone knows above all others: North Ribs Ribs is the best dang ribs restaurant in town.
Rebellious teenager Old Crawman never wanted to inherit the North Ribs Ribs empire, but when he discovers an unsettling secret about their new competition, he has to do something. Unfortunately for him, that something gets him tangled up with an evil wizard of ancient legends… who is not at all as he expected.
With Achten Tan’s powers-that-be keeping a close eye on Old Crawman, he’ll need all the help he can get if he wants to have his ribs and eat them too.
Review:
This was a really cute and entertaining read! I enjoy a cozy fantasy from time to time, and this one fit so well with my expectations.
With Old Crawman striving for adventure, then getting more than he bargained for—right in his own home town, no less—it was a lot of fun. Add to that his family’s ribs restaurant and the strange being that inhabits its basement, giant ants, a dark wizard, some necromancy, and you’ve got the makings of a wild story. There were some humorous bits too, particularly when Old Crawman is dealing with C’Naga (she’s a fun character!)
It’s a shorter work, an easy read, and I suspect there will be more from this world later, based on the last line. “Not the end. Never the end.” I loved that closing.
