Review:
I was sent A Kingdom of Lies in exchange for an honest review.
For me A Kingdom of Lies had a slow start, there was a bit of time where I was wondering if I should just put it down, but I persisted and I’m happy to say I really enjoyed the second half of the book. Once the plot got out of ‘what do we do next’ and people were no longer trapped in places I found that I was quite enjoying myself.
We’re introduced to a new love interest in A Kingdom of Lies. After not feeling so sure about Erix in A Betrayal of Storms I feel like I liked this new guy more, there’s really no good reason for him to fall for Robin, if anything it goes against everything he stands for. I would’ve loved a bit more of a slow-burn, maybe some more pining, but by the end I was onboard with their romance.
We find out a bit more about the world here. We’re still in the ACTOAR but make it gay, and the influence is quite clear, but as I stand by what I said in my first review. This feels like a comfort read because I can see the style and I know from the start it’s the kind of book I’ll want to curl up and binge read. You discover the origins of some creatures and A Kingdom of Lies delves further into the idea of gods, and I think we also have the reveal of the big bad. It’s straying into the territory I really enjoyed with gods etc.
I really want the relationships to be developed even further in book #3. This is the type of romantasy where the overall plot is important but really I’m reading for the romance side of things. This isn’t a bad thing, I do think the stakes are going to be high and the true plot has only just been unveiled, so I hope the next books will draw me further into the fantasy plot.
