Synopsis:
If Looks Could Kill by Julie Berry is a blend of historical fiction, mythology, and crime thriller that puts Jack the Ripper against Medusa in 1888 New York that picks up more later on in the book.
This YA novel follows Salvation Army volunteers Tabitha and Pearl as they try to rescue a girl trapped in a brothel. Their mission gets mixed up with Medusa’s hunt for Jack, creating a thrilling story infused with female rage and sisterhood.
Review:
Berry’s attention to historical detail and approachable prose paint a haunting setting. Medusa emerges as a protector, more than viscous monster. The growing bond between Tabitha and Pearl, mixed with humor gives the story emotional depth with a slow burn romantic sub-plot thrown in the mix. It’s targeted audience is younger YA however, the plot and darker adult themes may be a challenge younger readers. I feel the target audience should be older YA if not adult.
With compelling characters and an interesting premise, this book delivers a different kind of tale of vengeance and resilience. I would recommend this book to fans of mythology and historical thrillers.
