Review
Right before we get started there’s a few content warnings with this book. There’s violence, gore, gory violence, senseless violence all topped with a little bit more violence.
Ok! Now we have that out of the way let’s crack on.
I think you may know I like horror, and I like most aspects of horror. However, generally there are some aspects of horror that I don’t generally go to, and extreme horror is not usually my bag, but I thought I would give this one a go.
Dying Sheep is set in 1980, wherw notorious killer Marvin Brumlow is sat on Death Row, awaiting execution.
Not long before he’s due to ride the lightning, he is visited by a strange man, called Jimmy, who promises him fame and riches. He explains to Marvin that he’s from hell, and that Hell has a kind of competitive sport where a creature from the pots of Hell is sent to terrorise humans back in the real world.
We follow Marvin as he is sent to kill off a group of teenagers who have gone to a lakeside cabin.
The book is full of all the tropes of the slasher movie, except this time it’s from the point of view of the killer as he follows the teenagers, picking them off one by one, whilst putting on a show for the denizens of Hell. As Marvin plays the game, he learns all he rules that he has to follow, and so do we.
The kills are all over the top and become more depraved as the book moves on. However, there is a sense of utter nonsense and black humour, but it is enjoyable because of this sense of humour. However, please be aware this is a very over the top, gory book and you may need a strong stomach as the methods that Marvin uses to kill the teenagers are graphically described.
Mark aka Fantasy Book Nerd
I’m Mark, otherwise known as Fantasy Book Nerd (I don’t know if you have seen my blog, but it’s been going for a while), and this is me in my other iteration, the horror lover. This time without the normal skull mask on, well actually, I do still have the skull mask on, I mean, I can’t subject you all to my real face, there’s laws against that!
Horror was actually the first thing I got into as a kid. I got bought horror books for kids, I watched all the old Hammer Horror and Universal movies before moving onto video nasties when the video player was released, and also read a load of horror, including all the old stalwarts like James Herbert, Stephen King and others.
