Synopsis:
The Old Mayor’s Mansion sits just a few miles outside the town of Cemetery.
When best friends Sean and Devon want to increase views on their ghost investigation channel, they know the mansion is the perfect spot to film.
Armed with a slew of new equipment, the buddies set out to capture the paranormal hotspot that will make them famous—just maybe not in the way they were hoping.
Review:
How many people remember the GhostFacers from the TV show Supernatural? A pair of inept bros who go hunting ghosts and end up in trouble serious enough they need rescuing by the Winchesters Every. Single. Time?
BestGhost is like that, but without the Winchesters there to save our (not quite) fearless heroes!
(I say this with all the love in my heart because the GhostFacers were among my favorite parts of Supernatural.)
BestGhost may be Sean’s brainchild, a chance for him to experience the thrill of hunting ghosts and seeing the supernatural firsthand, but best friend Devon—aka “BOOMER!”—is along for the ride despite being a skeptic. Together, they set out to explore the Old Mayor’s Mansion…and with dark and dire consequences for both.
The dynamic between Sean and Devon are the heart of the story. They are immediately entertaining and enjoyable to read, with skeptic Devon doing his best to doubt everything while true believer Sean is far too enthusiastic about every creaking floorboard and every gust of wind that MIGHT be the voice of a ghost.
I loved how Sean and Devon explained their “high tech ghost-hunting gadgets” to their YouTube channel followers (of which there had to be only 2 or 3, amirite?), and in so doing, gave us insight into what to expect from said tech and how it will detect the ghosts.
So that when the tech does exactly what it’s supposed to do, we begin to feel the chills creeping down our spine and the sense of unease settling in.
What starts out as a light, humorous read slowly gets darker and darker, until the fear has a hold on you and won’t let go. I won’t spoil the ending, but suffice it to say, there is some very real proof that the mysterious may actually be the supernatural, and if ghosts are real, some are truly dangerous.
I enjoyed every minute I spent reading this novelette, and though horror isn’t my genre of choice, I’m definitely looking forward to the upcoming “Tales from Cemetery”.
