Arc Review: Page’s Pyre (Dragon Reich Series #2) by Jordan Loyal Short

November 17, 2024 by Alan Behan Leave a Comment

Rating: 9.5/10

Synopsis

How do you steal a book that doesn’t exist?

When Izola travels to Jarlsbeck bearing news of her ex-husband’s death, she discovers that her daughter, Page, has made dangerous friends. Obsessed with finding a mythical book whose origins are clouded in mystery, Page is embroiled in a magical heist. To steal the book out from under the noses of a secret society of librarians, she’ll have to assemble a team of a sarcastic dwarven historian, a devious summoner, and of course… a book witch—her mother.

But working together will test the team’s loyalties. Page was always a daddy’s girl, and her rebellious spirit has pushed her away from Izola. Worst of all, Page is keeping a secret that just might get the whole team killed.

On the eve of Reinveldt’s post-war election, the world’s fate teeters on the brink, and the sinister Thule Society puts forth a candidate. Nothing is beneath the Thule in their quest to control the fabled book:intimidation, blackmail, assassination.

Can mother and daughter make peace in time to save a nation from itself? And can the team hold it together long enough to steal the legendary book, or will old scars and secret agendas tear them apart?

Review

Wow, that was fantastic and a very entertaining follow-up to the first book City in the Dragon’s Eye. After being left with such a cliffhanger of an ending, you are launched straight back into where we came to the demise of some very unsavoury characters, and our main protagonists find themselves in a new city with on a new adventure to try stop the Thule society.

Page’s Pyre is the second book in the Dragon Reich series by Jordan Loyal Short, and he has outdone himself with this riveting draconian tale. What I absolutely love about this story is that it never lets up on the action scenes. It’s fast-paced, excitingly dark, and humorously good fun.
There’s new excellent characters and a new protagonist, Page, Izola’s daughter, added to the plot to bring a new intensity to an already exhilarating story.

The author has crafted a tale where he touches on bigotry, racism, violence, and same sex relationships in a diverse world full of humans, dwarves, elves, and dragon people, and he weaves beautifully together with his prose and wonderful storytelling, making you cling to every word and page as you are dragged deeper into his new world full of secret society’s of dragons and dark magic.

If you are into thoroughly entertaining fantasy, epic adventures, evil villains, secret societies, fantastic mismatched characters full of witty dialogue, dragons, dark magic, political intrigue, excellent world-building and a magical mysteries library full of twists and turns literally. Then you will love this one from the author who brought us the amazing dark trilogy, The Dreadbound Ode. P.S. If you haven’t read it yet, then check it out.

In this book, Izola finds herself on airship to Jarlsbeck to find her daughter Page, to bring her news of her father demise after getting involved with the evil Thule society of dragons and kidnapping her, nearly bringing the Island of Dannbridge to destruction by opening the Tyrant’s tomb.

With some help from her mismatched friends Vicktor, a tumourling, and court dandy Devin, they’ve managed to stall the Thules society in Dannbridge. But the Thule society is not done with them yet as Izola and her friends find themselves wrapped up in another one of their scemes across the channel.

Page is on a mission to find a magical book, the Canta Riviso, after being blackmailed, but she can’t find it alone and needs her mother’s help. But the two have not seen eye to eye since her mothers spilt with her father. Page is hiding a dark secret just like her father did, and things are about to get a whole lot darker. There’s a revolution coming to Jarlsbeck, and the Thule society is only getting started. Heists, blackmail, assassination and that’s just the beginning.

A truly mesmerising read, it was definitely worth the wait. Can’t wait for the next instalment. If you’re looking for something new and exciting to get your teeth and claws into, check out the Dragon Reich series, I very highly recommend…😁🐲🔥
