What a contrast between Evan and one of the interviewers on the subject of romance. Evan comes across as articulate and respectful, able to appreciate why a genre could work for some people even if it isn’t necessarily for him and to take positive aspects from it.

One of the interviewers instead is condescending and takes on a mocking tone, as well as trotting out such tired clichés as “it’s formulaic”, “they’re all the same except for one thing that changes”… Clichés which are so easy to disprove with the slightest bit of honest research. Passing this kind of judgement only indicates you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Maybe consider the way other people condescend to fantasy readers and don’t inflict that on another genre, even if it’s romance, the easy target for anyone who wants to feel good about what they’re reading, because what easier target for ridicule than a genre by women for women and that deals with squicky feelings.

It’s so disappointing to see this kind of sniggering intellectual laziness. You can do better. In any case Evan was really interesting and had lots of fascinating life experience so I guess that was the most important takeaway from this podcast.

Thank you for your comment, Estelle. While I do agree I could’ve taken a better approach in my response, I am entitled to my opinion as it is my podcast. I also do know a little bit about what I am talking about, believe it or not. Genre fiction, yes, even fantasy and science fiction which this podcast and blog mainly deal with, is formulaic. That isn’t to say every single novel fits the mold, but by and large, a majority do. I am glad you enjoyed Evan’s involvement with the episode and I hope you will continue coming back for more episodes.
